Sandpoint Skijoring

ONE HORSE, ONE ROPE, ONE SKIER...IT'S SKI JORING! AND IT'S BACK!!!

Midwinter blues are a thing of the past, as witness to Sandpoint's Winter Carnival in 2011, The newest and biggest event; Ski Joring made it's debut in Sandpoint for the first time last year. This event kicks off Winter Carnival February 18 and 19, 2012 at 12 Noon.

The 2011 Ski Joring event had fantastic start, with 23 teams competing and more than 2500 spectators over the two day event. "The excitement was palpable from spectators, riders, skiers and even the horses," said Greater Sandpoint Chamber CEO, Kate McAlister. Event organizer Matt Smart of Mountain Horse Adventures, said: "The vibe from the crowd was much more exciting then we had imagined. Many of the spectators even said that they'll compete next year".

Combining two favorite action pastimes-skiing and horseback riding - Ski Joring involves horses and riders pulling skiers at high speeds around a course of jumps and gates. Did we just mix Barrel Racing with Slalom Ski Racing?

Ski Joring is an equally exciting show for spectators and everyone's invited to watch the action. Bring all to this family-friendly event. There will be booths, food, and some fun surprises.

Saturday-Sunday, February 18 and 19, 2012

Bonner County Fairgrounds (two miles north of Sandpoint), in the rodeo arena. Competiton starts at 12 noon, gates open at 11am. Admission is FREE but a $3 parking fee will be collected. Additional parking space is planned and will be located in the south entrance of the Fairgrounds.

Friday, Feb 17

Check in and Registration Party will be held Friday night, February 17, starting at 4pm and ending at 10pm located at Laughing Dog Brewery (1109 Fontaine Dr, Ponderay, ID 83852). If you have a fast horse or are good on skis (also handy: nerves of steel!) then why not? You can enter as a team or individually to be paired with either a rider or skier. WE'RE GONNA GO BIG IN FEBRUARY! The 2012 event will have three new divisons for contestants and added prize money!

Sandpoint's Ski Joring event is presented by the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce and sanctioned by the North American Ski Joring Association (NASJA), which was founded in 1999 to allow Ski Joring competitors from around the country to have a set of fair, standard rules, and earn points towards a National Champion Award.
